This project organized and facilitated by the West Modesto/ King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative (WMKKNC) implements community-driven strategies to improve behavioral health and well-being of 5 community pastors/ministers and their members. The project is designed to build community among the 5 local churches and their pastors/ministers. There are two specific components to capacity building.

I. A Way to Wellness, led by Reverend James Anderson and Christian Love Baptist Church engages the 4 other church-congregations in participating in “healthy eating-“healthy cooking-“healthy walking” activities. Through a youth summit and adult forum, wellness lifestyle behavior is taught. Cooking demonstrations are used to emphasize cooking traditional ethnic dishes with recipes that are lower in fat and calories while capturing the flavor, texture and sense of traditional recipes.

The third component will be healthy walking and will feature regular “healthy walking” activities that provide exercise, build community and reinforce the wellness aspects of the project.

II. Beyond The Wall, focuses on equipping the 5 local pastors and key staff to handle parishioners and community residents who experience or encounter behavior health concerns through; (1) quarterly planning meetings hosted by the WMKKNC leadership; (2) providing the pastors and some of their key staff with trainings on “Demystifying BHRS” and “Faith Based Wellness” and (3) assisting in developing and providing appropriate messages through their sermons, teachings, church bulletin boards and church bulletins.
