Designed around the “40 Developmental Assets” framework — a transformational approach to supporting youth — the Families in the Park program seeks to identify the developmental attributes of each target student and collaboratively works together to strengthen and use these qualities more effectively while creating additional assets. This process takes place through the coordinated efforts of the youth themselves; their families and neighbors; school teachers and staff; and West Modesto/King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative (WMKKNC), a youth supporting community organization.

The project reaches out, connects and creates an environment that supports families that are underserved, (predominantly mothers with pre-school children) who spend their days from April to November in Mellis Park. These families face significant barriers to services. This project focuses on preparing young children to enter kindergarten school ready. In serving these families the project seeks to provide needed support to increase the school readiness of the young children.
