FOR OUR KIDS, FOR OUR SAFETY, FOR OUR COMMUNITY

To address the increasing rate of childhood obesity and diabetes, the West Modesto King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative (WMKKNC) has developed a number of key strategies aimed at reducing these as well as other chronic diseases common among West Modesto residents. The Helen White Memorial Trail is one of those key strategies. Not only is the walking trail a sustainable effort in addressing obesity, it also plays a significant role in improving ones emotional health and well-being over the long term.

West Modesto’s current landscape does not lend itself to promote or facilitate physical activity. County pockets do not have sidewalks and street lighting is limited. Schools are located next to busy streets and dangerous highways.

Seniors, adults and children have expressed additional concerns – like scary dogs, strange people and fast drivers – that prevent them from walking outside. Residents feel strongly that a walking trail can provide a safer environment while also increasing physical activity. Fundraising for the Helen White Walking Trail is ongoing.
