West Modesto Community Collaborative (WMCC) is a nonprofit organization whose history can be traced back to the establishment of the Stanislaus County Minority Community Health Coalition on April 22, 1991, by a dedicated collective of 15 individuals actively involved in public service, education, and community engagement. The primary objective of this organization is to tackle health-related challenges affecting the African American, Hispanic, Southeast Asian, and other communities within Stanislaus County.
The Coalition's active engagement and concern prompted the County's Interagency Children's Service Coordinating Council and Board of Supervisors to seek their leadership in March 1995 for the West Modesto/King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative under the Sierra Health Foundation Community Partnerships for Healthy Children Initiative, with a specific focus on west Modesto. This initiative led to the establishment of the Stanislaus Multi-cultural Community Health Coalition*West Modesto/King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative, which has consistently demonstrated its dedication to service and maintained strong connections and collaborations with county health services, city schools, government entities, and various organizations within the county.
Through their collaboration with the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency, community leaders from diverse ethnic groups were identified to collaborate closely with Health Services Agency's Community Health Worker(s) I/II. This marked the inception of community-building efforts in west Modesto, including the deployment of Neighborhood Outreach Workers in June 1995, establishing a connection between the community and service providers.
The Helen White Trail is 0.5 miles located between California Ave and Maze Blvd. This trail used to be known as "Briggs Ditch" and it was named in honor of Helen White.
The Helen White trail aims to provide a secure path for all residents, with a particular focus on benefiting students from Franklin Elementary, Mark Twain Junior High, and Modesto High school.
Mrs. White's dedication to improving the quality of life for children and families in Modesto is commemorated through the trail, ensuring that future generations remember and benefit from her tireless efforts in the community.
Helen White played a significant role in the West Modesto community since the 1960s. She arrived in Modesto in 1962 and became a dedicated advocate for the well-being of children and families in the area. Mrs. White's involvement in the community was extensive. She pursued an associate degree at Modesto Junior College while working part-time at the Maddux center. She then joined the county's Public Housing Authority, where she dedicated over 30 years of service before retiring in 1997. Even in her 70s, she continued working for the betterment of west Modesto, leading the West Modesto/King Kennedy Neighborhood Collaborative.
